The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Park Maintenance Worker I or the Park Maintenance Worker II classification. The range for the Park Maintenance Worker I is $17.91 - $21.50 per hour; and for the Park Maintenance Worker II is $18.81 - $22.57 per hour.

The City of Plano is seeking enthusiastic and hardworking individuals to join our Parks Department team as a Park Maintenance Worker I or II. This vital role involves maintaining and enhancing the beauty of our public spaces through mowing, landscaping, pruning, and debris removal. Responsibilities include inspecting and maintaining tools and equipment, operating power tools such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers, and assisting with projects like sod installation, tree planting, and landscape renovations. Experience with riding mowers is preferred. Additionally, this position may support special events by assisting with set-up and logistics. Winter hours for this position are Monday - Friday 6:45am - 3:30pm. Schedule for summer is Monday and Wednesday 5:00am - 1:45, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 6:45am - 3:30pm.

Park Maintenance Worker I (The job description for the Park Maintenance Worker II is listed below.)

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level classification in the Park Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision. This classification is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker II in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Mows and maintains turf and landscaping; prunes and trims trees and shrubs; removes weeds from beds; removes litter, brush and debris from assigned areas.
  • Inspects, cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
  • May operate power equipment including one-ton trucks and trailers, push mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers and blowers. Riding mower experience preferred.
  • Assists with various projects including sod and seed installation and establishment, tree planting and minor landscape renovations.
  • May assist with set-up and support of special events.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.


Marginal Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Decisions: The incumbent receives direction and follows established guidelines. Responsible for inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment, using good judgement, practicing safe work methods and utilizing proper safety equipment and PPE.

Minimum Qualifications :

Knowledge of: Routine construction, repair and landscape maintenance methods used in area of responsibility; tool and equipment operation and maintenance.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; operating vehicles, operating equipment and tools required in assigned area of responsibility under supervision; following instructions.

Education: No formal education required.

Experience: Six months of previous experience in parks maintenance, landscaping, or construction required.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications : Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license within 30 days of hire per state law).

Conditions of Employment : Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Park Maintenance Worker II

Summary of Duties : Under regular supervision, the Parks Maintenance Worker II is responsible for providing assistance with routine maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities and landscaping for assigned area.

Distinguishing Characteristics : This is the advanced-level classification in the Park Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under regular supervision.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings, parks, and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work (heavy to strenuous when assigned to Forestry) and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance, repairs, and various daily tasks. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to constant noise, cold and hot temperatures, temperature swings, dust, mechanical hazards, and hazardous odors and fumes. When assigned to Forestry, may be exposed to noxious plants, venomous creatures, and wildlife within riparian forests.
