Manufacturing Project Design Manager

Our Design & Consulting Team unites architecture, engineering, and consulting professionals to serve clients with multiple project delivery methods. Work on impactful projects across markets including food and beverage, consumer products, aviation and aerospace, civil infrastructure, healthcare, and Federal Government projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Application of Knowledge
    • Directs and is accountable for all aspects of the design effort on a project for the disciplines assigned, including conformance of project systems and components with criteria.
    • Coordinate among disciplines and conformance to corporate standards for design documents (calculations, drawings, specifications).
  • Client Management
    • Directs criteria acquisition from clients, distributes to the AE team, and communicates responses.
    • Serve as primary client interface during the design.
    • Ensure meeting minutes documented for all client meetings.
    • Clarify client needs and document what is required for effective delivery.
    • Conform project systems to criteria; negotiate issue resolutions among design disciplines and with construction staff.
    • Maintain a positive client relationship and develop potential future work opportunities.
  • Construction Support
    • Monitor design team responses to RFIs and submittal reviews; prioritize critical responses.
    • Track cost, schedule, and procurement when assigned; supervise installations and start-up as needed.
  • Change Management
    • Define and manage design scope changes and their impact on schedule and financials; document changes per contract.
  • Financial
    • Develop design budget, fees, and scopes; project financial performance and monthly projections.
    • Monitor weekly fee burn for short-duration projects; ensure owner invoicing per contract (design projects).
    • Manage outside consultants as needed; monitor project cash flow and report status to the project manager/director.
  • Scheduling
    • Coordinate staffing with other design PMs; develop and update the design schedule; provide regular schedule updates.
    • For proposals, determine schedule for pricing and deliverables; ensure design schedule compliance.
  • Strategy
    • Contribute to win strategy for proposals; participate in marketing and business development as assigned.
    • Develop and comply with drawing and specification production strategy; contribute to design project management policies.
  • Leadership
    • Supervise project personnel; maintain project communications via regular review meetings.
    • Ensure contractual requirements are satisfied; lead in teaming and integration of design and construction staff.
    • Manage performance reviews, career development, and participation in corporate quality programs.
    • Ensure design documents reside in appropriate network folders and archiving of AE documents.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Chemical, or Automation) or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive design experience, including 5 years as an independent lead designer and at least 3 years performing design management and coordination with a project manager.
  • Working knowledge of one or two related design disciplines and ability to manage and coordinate all design activities.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Licenses, Certifications

  • Professional registration or eligibility (preferred).
  • Navisworks experience preferred.
  • Client management and change management skills.
  • Intermediate MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; knowledge of design document production and presentation software.
  • Budgeting, forecasting, and design management software proficiency.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, management, and leadership abilities.
  • Experience in budgeting, scheduling, proposal writing, staffing, coordination, conflict resolution, and change management.
  • PMP certification desired but not required.

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

Regular ambulation for visiting locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift light to medium weights (10-50 pounds). Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity; ability to use a keyboard and read information. May require sitting, reaching, talking, and hearing.

Base salary range: $125,000-$210,000 (specific to California and St. Paul, MN; final offer based on knowledge, skills, and experience). Haskell is a Drug-Free Workplace.
